FEBRUARY 18, 2010 - The first ever Men’s Health Forum educated and entertained the attendees of the seminar last Thursday. Ramon P. Llamas, Director of Health Education and Promotion for the Men’s Health Network spoke to both men and women eager to hear more about many of the under-promoted issues in men’s health today. Llamas’ presentation included social and societal barriers to men’s health, the general challenges in the media that men face, and the alarming facts about the general state of men’s health. “Men's health is an important topic, especially among members of our age group,” said attendee Jake Vreeburg. “It was an informative session and a topic that should be brought to campus on a larger level to ensure all young men are made aware of the health obstacles we'll face”. Travis Ballie, Men's Outreach Director for Women's Initiative and Alan Duffy were instrumental in bringing in Llamas as a speaker. SigEp helped table for the event in MGC and the logistics were run by SigEp Jared Alves. The Forum’s success may lead to a second annual event next year. “We started planning the forum at the end of last semester, holding meetings in person and over the phone” said Alves. “It took a lot of time and effort but I look forward to seeing it held again next year.” Sigma Phi Epsilon is the largest fraternity in the nation with over 14,000 current undergraduate brothers and was founded at American University in the Spring of 2005. Since then the chapter has established a lasting presence at AU and continues to help create balanced leaders in the local community. |
