Nationally Chartered as the DC Delta Chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity on October 4, 2008.

Recruitment

Sigma Phi Epsilon is a Fraternity unlike any other:

If you excel in athletics, the arts, or academics, then you belong in SigEp.  If you consider yourself a leader and a gentlemen, you belong in SigEp.  If you aim for continuous personal growth in order to make a significant positive impact on the world around you, then you belong in SigEp. We recognize these qualities in our brothers that separate our Fraternity from the rest, but we encourage you to find out for yourself what makes SigEp different.

A Bit of National History

Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded November 1, 1901 on the Cardinal Principles: Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. Today the Fraternity has grown to more than 277,000 lifetime members, and currently includes over 14,000 undergraduates on 260 campuses in the United States. Since its foundation, it has drawn men of honor, men of virtue, and leaders, to its ranks. SigEp has always striven for excellence and the American University chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon is a shining example of this goal. The chapter is driven by Sigma Phi Epsilon’s award-winning leadership program, the Balanced Man Program.

A Balanced Man

First implemented by Sigma Phi Epsilon in the fall of 1992, this program is a self-paced, personal development experience. It is based on the maxim "Universal respect for self and others." Brothers are encouraged to live a balanced life based on the foundation of the Balanced Man Concept of "sound mind and sound body."  As a proponent of the Balanced Man ideal, SigEp does not haze, nor do we have a pledging process. Once you accept your invitation to membership, you are a full brother. The success of the Balanced Man Program is evidenced by a few simple facts about the chapter.

Our Chapter

The American University chapter of SigEp has the highest GPA among all other AU fraternities at 3.45. Brothers of the chapter have held and continue to hold leadership positions both on campus and off. These include:

  • Vice President and President of the Student Government
  • Editor-in-Chief of AU's student newspaper, The Eagle
  • Ten SG Undergraduate Senators
  • Vice-President of the Class of 2010 Council
  • Campaign Manager for the State Senator of the 12th District of Nevada
  • Internship with the Democratic Governors Association
  • An Internship with the FBI
  • RHA President
  • SAC President

The Fraternity also excels in sports: our intramural football team reached the semi-finals this year, while our soccer team went undefeated to become Intramural Champions. Even with those successes, we are always seeking to improve our teams (especially Basketball), and are looking for guys who enjoy having fun while remaining competitive.

If you are interested in joining a fraternity, why not join the one that strives to be everything that a stereotypical 'frat boy' is not. Sigma Phi Epsilon is different. As a chapter, we aim to better the lives of the community and ourselves and endeavor to dispel the image of fraternities as portrayed in the media. Most importantly, we strive to uphold our virtues.
